Curriculum Choices Spring Session 2019

Language Arts - The Good and the Beautiful - Level K

My daughter (5) finished up The Good and the Beautiful  Primer and Primer Supplement before Christmas.  She enjoyed putting three letter words together and beginning to read.  She continues to go back and read stories out of the Primer Reader.  The new Beginner Books Box A which came out timely, were also a hit.  When the level K books arrived, she was so excited to start!

So, we are starting Level K slowly!  As this is an advanced curriculum (1st grade material) and my daughter has been slow to be solid on her alphabet, I was hesitant to start.  She was doing well sounding out words and was motivated to learn to read so we will take it day by day!

Math - Math U See - Alpha

Math is a strong point for my daughter.  She was already counting to 100 with minimal help and doing very basic addition in the fall.  We had previously been working through Primer and decided to move her on to Alpha.

Math U See is a mastery based program so becoming strong in each concept before moving on.  Alpha focuses on single digit addition and subtraction supplemented with shapes, place value and telling time.

Her twin brothers (2) think this is the best part of school as they get to play with the blocks!  Her favorite game is race to 100.  This game alone has allowed me to see her grow in her memory of which number is which color of block and which block would fit in the space left on the 10x10 square.  She also had fun building the block clock!

Religion - Baltimore Catechism and Little Acts of Grace

My daughter has demonstrated a propensity for memorization!  She is truly enjoying going through the original Baltimore Catechism 1 and repeating back from memory the answers to each of the lessons.  She gets to work on this each week with her dad!

We are also reading little by little from the beautiful little book, Little Acts of Grace.  This little gem presents in a simple yet beautiful way the little things we as Catholics do.  It ties in scripture and examples how to use them appropriate for young Catholics 4-8 but is also a good reminder for Adults too.  Topics covered include bowing our head at the name of Jesus, greeting Jesus when we pass a Church to parts of the Mass and praying for the sick.

Science, History and More

At this time we explore science and history through children's books on topics of interest.  Lately we have explored Penguins and a book on Seasons.  We are also reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder daily at breakfast.  Arts and Crafts, and trips to the park and library round out our homeschool days!
